Budget item from Tuesday's City Council session:

We're going to spend $19 million of Memphis' money and $10 million of federal and state money, for a project whose popular support rivals the new stadium. Meanwhile a very popular project, a project that spans the length of the entire city, that will promote our health, recreation, environment and almost certainly our economy, is reduced to 4% of the funding of BSL. Since the project will cost around $27 million in 2007 dollars, we only have to wait 67 years in 2007 appropriations to walk the Greenway.
Beware the new stadium! They'll lead with hype and hope we follow with apathy. And they won't take 67 years to build it.

No developers care about the greenline. No Developers=no suitcases of cash (or rolexes)= apathetic city council.

bummer, the email i got from ffor said it would just be 30 years!
The article in Sunday's CA said $400,000 was budgeted so the figure was reduced before Tuesday. It didn't say how the reduction happened.
67 years is in 2007 appropriations. It's possible they could fund a lot more for the Greenway next year, reducing the completion date to 15 years (or less). But with BSL due another $9 million dollars and the bulldozers already rolling on it, the same financial pressure faced this year to reduce will likely exist next year as well.
I admit I am impatient, but even 15 years seems too incredibly long a horizon.
