Café Eclectic Opens, Starbucks Closes

Okay, Memphis java chain store lovers, Starbuck's will be closed tonight. Use the opportunity to acquaint yourself with Memphis' newest coffee house, Café Eclectic, which opened yesterday.

The entrance.

McLean-side table, looking over the playing fields of Snowden School.

The coffee bar.

A great place.

Or you can check out one of Memphis' other locally-owned coffee houses. Two of my favorites, by my proximity and their imagination, are Otherlands and Java Cabana.

Support the businesses and creativity of local entrepeneurs.

Update: per Fearlessvk's question, Café Eclectic's hours are presently 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. They plan to be open later in the near future.

6 am to 8 pm M-F
Their house coffee is a very smooth italian brew.
The best part is they are two blocks from our house. It will soon be our second home:) You'll likely run into one of my family members there if you decide to frequent it. My son already digs their donuts and ice cream- which is perfect since it's across the street from his school.

The owner Cathy and Chef Mary are super nice people.
Nice wireless touch too....

Best of all as Gates mentioned, it's a great way to support a local entrepreneur who has put in a tremendous effort to convert a crumbling old building into a charming little Cafe.

Enjoy!

Excellent, they do have wireless! I was about to ask that, but then I saw Aaron's comment. I might just take my laptop and work out of there on occasion then. As my aunt was a former coffee shop owner (in cordova/bartlett) who was driven out of business by Starbucks, I much prefer to support local coffee houses.

Are they serving lunch/dinner yet? I had read somewhere that they would only be serving breakfast for a while

I went in about 1 pm today and they seemed to be doing brisk business. I looked at a house on Tutwiler nearby about a year ago and was really struck by the eastward view across the snowden fields towards evergreen pres and rhodes. I'm glad to report that Cafe Eclectic takes full advantage of this view. If I ever get up early enough, it would be a great spot to watch the sun rise with a cup of coffee.

aaron, thanks for adding needed details, especially about the coffee.

cdel, I think they're just doing breakfast, but I could really be wrong about that. Give 'em a ring or visit to be sure.

jccvi, it's wonderful to find new perspectives on the same places.

They are doing breakfast-only through next week and then lunch starts the following week....

Is it true that the front window was shattered and the cash register stolen before the first week was out?

I heard that from a neighbor just minutes ago. She was walking over to Cafe Eclectic for a book club meeting (her fourth visit since it opened).

Midtown in a nutshell I suppose.

Yep, they had a break-in the night before I went there for coffee with friends. As JCCVI said, it's all part of being in Midtown. Not really that surprised. They have been busy every day since opening. We go by there every day. They fixed the door the same day.

just got back from the café - really liked it. plus, they understand the fundamental premise of hot chocolate: it is merely a conveyance for whipped cream. lots and lots of whipped cream.

you mentioned otherlands and java cabana as local shops.
i also wanted to add that high point coffee is local as well, and not a corporate chain. they have a store on union and belvedere.

Thanks anonymous for pointing out High Point, based in Oxford, MS. Check it out!
